Mace’s ‘classy’ approach impressed the judges - as well as the clients on some of the year’s most prestigious projects, including Vauxhall Sky Gardens, South Bank Tower and Battersea Power Station

Mace project

winner

Mace

Mace says it went from strength to strength in 2013 and put forward such a compelling case that the judges wholeheartedly agreed and named it this year’s winner. As it continues its international growth, Mace now boasts a turnover in excess of £900m following a 5% rise over the year. Group pre-tax profit rose by a very healthy 11% but the firm also stood out for its “classy” approach according to the judges. Highlights during the year included its appointment on a number of top tier central London projects such as the Nova project at Victoria, South Bank Tower, Battersea Power Station and most recently Vauxhall Sky Gardens. The firm also announced a joint venture with Essential Living as developer on the landmark PRS residential tower at Newington Butts in south-east London, and was appointed on the second phase of the BSkyB head offices project at Osterley in west London and an exciting new development at One Angel Court in the City. Judges also noted the firm’s “excellent staff engagement”, with a recent survey of employees revealing that 95% of staff say they are proud to work at Mace and that 90% say that they intend to stay with the company for the next 12 months.

Runner Up

Bam Construct UK

In 2013, BAM Construct UK reported progress towards achieving its vision of distinguishing its brand by being “customer-centric, creative and sustainable”. Among other things, it made major strides in applying BIM to facilities management, saying it used data in the completed BIM model “for more efficient and cost-effective operation and maintenance of the completed building”. BAM, which has a turnover above £900m and employs 2,000 staff, also picked up major new projects, including two projects for Rolls-Royce and the pre-construction contract for Google’s headquarters at King’s Cross in London. In addition, BAM was selected for the Manchester Airports Framework, re-selected for the Education Funding Agency Framework - north and south - and for a number of significant regional frameworks. It also achieved platinum status on the Corporate Responsibility Index run by Business in the Community, moved up the ranking from 95 to 70 on the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to Work For, and helped its staff raise £90,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, equating to 3,566 nursing hours for people with cancer. The wider BAM group also achieved an impressive pre-tax profit increase of above 200% over the year.
