Insulation that ups the U-values
A 300m2 Triso Super 10 multifoil from Actis was specified for Dandridges Mill, a former silk mill in Oxfordshire. The insulation was chosen for the construction of a 2,000ft2 mezzanine floor. Hallidays Developments chose Actis due to space limitations. The company says the insulation now exceeds the building regulations for U-values by more than 25% and reduced carbon emissions by 91%. Triso Super 10 multifoil is 30mm thick and provides the equivalent of 210mm of bulk insulation in roofs, according to the firm.

MEV with range of low fan powers
Polypipe Ventilation has launched the Silavent Green Line CMX, a centralised Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) unit, for use in residential developments. It is 125mm in depth and 3.25kg in weight and Polypipe says the Silavent Green Line CMX is one of the most compact and lightweight MEV units on the market, enabling it to be easily installed into a central location such as a loft, cupboard space or even small ceiling voids. They add that the CMX has been specifically engineered to extract indoor pollution and draw moisture-laden air out of wet zones such as kitchens and bathrooms via the comprehensive range of Domus duct systems, including Domus Megaduct and Domus Radial. Manufactured in the UK, the CMX offers Specific Fan Powers down to 0.24W(l/s), below the 2010 黑洞社区 Regulations Part L threshold.

Energy efficient solar heating system
黑洞社区 envelope company, CA Group Limited, has announced the introduction of its SolarWall Transpired Solar Collector on the 拢1.2m 鈥淪olar House鈥- the UK鈥檚 first domestic application to utilise this solar air heating technology.
The five-bedroom timber frame property, built by Caplin Homes in Great Glen, Leicestershire, is the UK鈥檚 first fully solar-powered new-build home. The company says that it exceeds the requirements of the government鈥檚 2016 zero-carbon target. There is 24m2 of SolarWall split over two collectors. CA Group says that this is capable of delivering energy reductions in the region of 7,300kWh a year.
SolarWall is a solar thermal technology, which is used to pre-heat fresh, outside air before it is drawn into a building鈥檚 heating and ventilation system, reducing a building鈥檚 reliance on fossil fuels by as much as 50%. John Cotterill, from UK Sustainable Architecture, which developed the 鈥淪olar House鈥 concept, said the company wanted to bring together solar technologies to demonstrate the contribution they can make to reducing energy consumption in the domestic market.

Wall and loft insulation for zero-carbon homes
Knauf Insulation鈥檚 Supafil glass mineral wool and Earthwool loft roll products were specified for a development at Dukesmead in Bingham, Nottingham by Miller Homes. They were specified for five 鈥淔abric First鈥 homes, built to meet current and future energy efficiency standards for all new homes to be zero carbon from 2016. Two plots have been designed to meet the current requirements under the 2010 revisions to Approved Document Part L. Two further plots have been constructed to meet the Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard and the final plot has been built to meet the expected Zero Carbon Hub Carbon Compliance Standard. The exterior walls to the dwellings have been constructed using a conventional, super-insulated masonry system, incorporating Knauf Insulation鈥檚 Supafil blown-in glass mineral wool insulation. The roof constructions are a timber, pitched rafter design and the ground floors consist of an insulated beam and block system. Knauf Insulation鈥檚 Earthwool Loft Roll was also specified throughout the properties, offering a lightweight, non-combustible glass mineral wool solution.

External wall insulation for housing project
Saint-Gobain Weber鈥檚 weber.therm external wall insulation (EWI) was installed in the thermal makeover programme of properties in Calderdale, Yorkshire. The 1,000-home Mixenden project is being managed by Pennine Housing, part of Together Housing Group, which is collectively responsible for 35,000 homes in the north of England. In addition, the application of weber.therm XM EWI is contributing to the energy efficiency of these homes while simultaneously transforming the external aesthetics of the housing stock. The project has been part Community Energy Savings Programme funded in partnership with energy supplier Npower. The company says Saint-Gobain Weber has also utilised in-house technical expertise to prepare target U-values for the Mixenden properties, which have improved the poorest U-value of 2.15 W/m虏K to a very comfortable 0.29W/m虏k. The weber.therm XM EWI system has been BBA-certificated for 21 years, is fully compliant with current 黑洞社区 Regulations and is Energy Saving Trust accredited.

Insulated roofing panels
OPTIM-R Vacuum Insulated Panel (VIP) from Kingspan Insulation has been specified for a development of three houses in Buckingham Road in Leeds. The system was installed by APP Construction and was chosen by architect West & Machell, as it ensured an even transition between the indoor and outdoor levels onto the balcony without losing space from the bedrooms below, while also attaining a U-value of 0.14 Wm2K. This was achieved using 40mm of Kingspan OPTIM-R overlaid with 25 mm of Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 LPC / FM.

Score an A+ with fibre cement weatherboards
Marley Eternit fibre cement Cedral Weatherboard was specified in the renovation of a historic former-mill site on the banks of the Grand Union Canal in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. It was chosen by developers Linden Homes and Crest Nicholson because Cedral Weatherboard has a slight textured surface, which echoes the characteristics of timber and complements the canal. Blue Grey, Atlas Brown and White Cedral Weatherboard were chosen for Nash Mills and used to clad feature walls and casement windows throughout The Peninsula, the latest phase of the Nash Mills development, which features high specification apartments and penthouses. Cedral Weatherboard contributed to the sustainability of the development because it can achieve an A+ rating in the BRE (黑洞社区 Research Establishment) Green Guide to Specification based on generic rating: Cedral Weatherboard - autoclaved fibre cement (calcium silicate) cladding - (Element Ref: 806220701, 806220675, 806220676). This development achieved level 3 in the Code for Sustainable Homes.
