Best single house category never fails to produce sleek modern architecture and this year was no exception. The winner 鈥 by a hair鈥檚 breadth 鈥 was 45 Kingstown Street, a confident expression of the modern house, albeit located in a sensitive conservation area in the heart of Camden, London.

A light, white-rendered upper floor 鈥減iano nobile鈥 hovers dramatically over the more 鈥渞usticated鈥 ground floor, which is nobly expressed by eye-catching stack-bonded brickwork. The judges admired the crisp detailing of the brickwork and glazing and the contrast made with the oversailing upper floor. The building constitutes a fine solution on a tricky site, made all the more impressive by the fact that this dwelling is believed to be the first detached house to be built in the area for at least 25 years.
