Completed in 2002, this major town centre refurbishment scheme used more than 2000 m2 of Blockleys 65 mm clay pavers. A variety of colours were used to create an intricate design depicting the pattern of the local river and the town’s links with the textile industry. The paver patterns were made off-site by using the cut-and-stick method and installed to create an attractive, durable finish.

The judges admired the intricacies of the detailing and the appliance of design and colour to enliven a rather ordinary town centre. And although town centre redevelopment schemes such as this are nothing new, creating circular cog patterns complete with teeth as convincingly and as professionally as this is no mean feat. The scheme perfectly demonstrates clay paving’s potential for enhancing town centres.
