Engineer Ramboll Whitbybird beats Arup to win RIBA design competition for footbridge in Sheffield

Engineer Ramboll Whitbybird and Danish architect Tim Norlund have won the RIBA鈥檚 international design competition for a footbridge in Sheffield.

The 拢2m bridge will be built by Sheffield and Rotherham Councils to create a route over the A360 Sheffield Parkway. The path is currently listed as one of the UK鈥檚 10 most dangerous routes.

Construction will start in autumn this year on site, and be completed in summer 2009.

The competition was judged by the RIBA adviser Nik Randall and beat shortlisted competition from Arup, DLG Architects, Satellite Architects, and Tony Leung from Hong Kong with Ove Arup.

The official judgement said: 鈥淏ased upon a simple 'O' ring design, the winning design was considered to be both inspired and inspiring.

鈥淭he expression of the structural simplicity was particularly liked. It was felt that the immediacy with which the form of the 'O' ring will be understood will provide an orienting device in the landscape, appearing different from each approach.鈥
