Plan to rebuild or revamp 11 schools has received approval

Southampton鈥檚 黑洞社区 Schools for the Future programme has won government approval for a document setting out its construction goals.

The city council鈥檚 scheme, explained in the Strategy for Change Part 1 document, includes the rebuilding or remodelling of seven secondary schools, ICT investment and the revamping of up to four special schools. The first wave of five schools is worth around 拢80m.

Paul Holmes, cabinet member for children鈥檚 services, said: 鈥淭he government has recognised Southampton is a city with great ambitions and the capacity to deliver for its communities. This approval means we can now move forward with our plans.

鈥淲e are confident that this momentum will continue into the next year when we begin to shortlist the contractors to deliver our bold plans.鈥�

Tim Byles, chief executive of Partnerships for Schools added: "Receiving approval for their SFC1 document is a significant milestone for Southampton's BSF project, as it lays the groundwork for bringing new and improved schools for students, teachers and the communities they serve.鈥�
