Structural failure is still a big problem, says Standing Committee on Structural Safety
The Standing Committee on Structural Safety has warned that the industry is still too complacent about structural safety despite improved understanding of how structures behave.
In its 16th Biennial report the SCOSS said structural failure is still a big problem citing many examples including of the failure of the Gerrards Cross railway tunnel, tower crane collapses and the demolition of the CASPAR housing scheme in Leeds due to inadequate structural stability.
The committee said it was concerned about the poor quality of ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø Control submissions and inadequate inspection of work by building control bodies, lack of awareness behind the assumptions in the Eurocodes and not learning lessons from past structural failures. The report recommended a review process for certain types of structure and the establishment of a centre of construction safety excellence.
