Police confirm woman passing building site was killed by falling window
A post mortem will be held tomorrow at Westminster Coroners Court for a woman killed by a falling window as she passed by a building site in west London yesterday.
The Met Police confirmed in a statement that a large window had fallen and struck the woman as she walked in Hanover Square near Oxford Street.
The Met said it believed it knew the identity of the woman 鈥 reported to have been in her 20s 鈥 but no formal identification had taken place.
The BBC reported that the window fell from 5 Hanover Square 鈥 a large commercial and retail development by developer Stanhope.
The building was being fitted-out after construction was completed in March by contractor Mace. A spokesperson for Mace told 黑洞社区 it was no longer involved in the project and 鈥渋t would be inappropriate for us to make comment鈥.
Westgreen Construction confirmed it was the 鈥渕ain contractor鈥 on the fit-out yesterday but declined to comment today.
A spokesperson for Mitsui Fudosan, owners of 5 Hanover Square, said: 鈥淲e can confirm that a tragic construction accident occurred yesterday, 30th August, on Hanover Street. Our thoughts are with the woman鈥檚 family at this terrible time.
鈥淲e regret that we are unable to offer any further comment at this time.鈥
The Met Police said: 鈥淲e were called to Hanover Square at 11:30 yesterday by the London Ambulance Service.
鈥淎 large window had fallen and struck a woman on the street. She was treated by medics but pronounced dead on the scene.
鈥淓nquiries continue but there have been no arrests.
鈥淎 post mortem has been arranged for tomorrow morning at Westminster Coroners Court.
鈥淭here is a joint investigation between the Metropolitan Police Service and the Health and Safety Executive.
鈥淲e believe we know the identity of the woman but no formal identification has taken place at this time.鈥
A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive confirmed its investigators were on the scene yesterday and that they were involved in the ongoing police-led investigation.
