The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) launched its sustainability strategy for the 2012 Olympics this week, claiming that it would be the greenest Games ever.

The ODA strategy, which was launched on Tuesday, promised to cut carbon emissions, minimise waste and reduce water usage.

The environmental targets include:

• Cutting carbon emissions from the Olympic park and venues by 50% more than required by the present ڶ Regulations

• Making the Olympic village 25% more energy efficient than required by current ڶ Regulations

• Installing enough renewable energy to provide 20% of the energy for the Olympic park and village.

• Constructing 20% of the venues from recycled materials.

Darren Johnson, a Green party member of the London assembly, said there was still a long way to go before London 2012 lived up to the billing “the greenest Olympics ever”.

Shaun McCarthy has been appointed chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, which will monitor the sustainability of the Games and report to the Olympic board.
