The Jestico + Whiles-designed redevelopment of Borough Market, in London, is now complete
The scheme, designed by architect Jestico + Whiles with engineers WS Atkins and contractor Skanska, is part of Network Rail’s major new rail infrastructure and related building works at Borough Viaduct.
The new market structure, which will accommodate an extended Green Market, is a simple steel frame with glazed screens running along the street frontages formed from overlapping glass panels.
Gently sloping glazed roofs incorporate a printed leaf motif that casts dappled shadows below. Also included below the viaduct is a small retail unit – fully glazed on two sides.
Other ongoing works on the project, designed by Jestico + Whiles, include the reconstruction of part of Borough Market utilising part of the original Victorian cast iron structure, and a three storey office and retail building on Bedale Street that includes a new entrance to the market.
A further retail and office development on Borough High Street, fronted by a new public plaza is also underway.
