锘縈&E contractor Mercury is among the firms that are forming the UK鈥檚 first green retrofitting company, it has emerged. The joint venture was launched last summer by contractor Brookfield, engineer WSP and architect Woods Bagot.

The company, Brookfield Green, aims to capitalise on demand for energy efficiency measures in non-domestic buildings as regulations such as the carbon reduction commitment come into force.

It said it has already begun construction on projects and was targeting 鈥渟izable commercial buildings for major corporations鈥� as well as the public sector.

Brookfield Green did not give a predicted turnover for the business and said that initially it would not have any employees of its own, instead using staff from member companies. It will be based in Brookfield鈥檚 London offices.

However, it was confident that it would start recruiting in its own right by the end of the year.

The company said new Part L regulations and display energy certificates for non-domestic buildings would increase the pressure on landlords to improve their energy performance.

Sam Royal, general manager at Brookfield Green, said: 鈥淢uch of our existing commercial building stock does not meet current environmental standards, while recent legislation coupled with rising energy costs has created the need for owners to invest.鈥�
