Broadway Malyan's controversial 拢120m development on Mann Island gets go-ahead

Architect Broadway Malyan鈥檚 controversial scheme on Mann Island in Liverpool has been granted planning permission by Liverpool council.

Developers Neptune Developments and Countryside Properties said construction work on the 拢120m waterfront scheme, on the site of Will Alsop鈥檚 failed 'cloud' project, will start in spring 2007.

The three wedge-shaped buildings, two of which will be residential, sits next to Danish architect 3XN鈥檚 contentious X-shaped Museum of Liverpool.

The planning decision had been delayed to allow World Heritage officials to review plans for developments in the city.

Opponents to the scheme have said the modern designs would cause serious harm to the architectural and historic significance of the Liverpool waterfront. In August CABE criticised the commercial building in Broadway Malyan's design.
