More than 15 bridges may be needed on A27 Arundel bypass

Knight Architects has been appointed to design bridge crossings for a proposed bypass of the West Sussex town of Arundel.

The practice said it was working with engineering consultant WSP on options for seven different bridge types for the A27 upgrade, which is currently being consulted on by Highways England.

It said the new road scheme, which could come with a pricetag of up to 拢260m depending on the precise route chosen, may require more than 15 bridges, including a 1.7km viaduct, as well as overbridges and footbridges.

鈥淪everal important factors have been taken into account for the design of the bridges of the new road which include the visual impact of part of the scheme on panoramic views from the historic town of Arundel, the proximity of the South Downs National Park, including areas of ancient woodland,鈥 it said.

The practice added that the new road would also have to deal with a floodplain with 鈥渃omplex hydraulic behaviour鈥.

Highways England鈥檚 consultation on three different routes that would link up existing dual carriageway sections of the A27 on either side of Arundel is open until October 16.
