Industrialist bankrolling £19m deal
Kier is preferred bidder to build a £19m science block at a top private school as part of a scheme being bankrolled by Sir James Dyson.
The industrialist is a former pupil at Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk, where yearly boarding fees currently top £36,000.
Work will involve building a 4,000 sq m space (pictured) that will include science labs, maths and computer science classrooms and technology workshops.
Designed by Wilkinson Eyre, it will also have a 3D IT room and an arts department and will be built on the existing school site, next door to the Britten building previously constructed by Kier.
Work at the school, where other former pupils include poet WH Auden and England rugby union player Ben Youngs, is due to start this spring and finish next summer.
Meanwhile, Kier has won a contract to build Crawley’s new town hall, part of a wider £150m regeneration of the town centre.
Due to be completed in December next year, the firm has been appointed along with architect Cartwright Pickard. Joint client is Crawley borough council and developer Westrock.
As well as the town hall, work will also involve building an 11-storey apartment block.
Portsmouth contractor Hughes and Salvidge has been appointed to carry out demolition of both the existing 1960s-built town hall and car park which will make way for the new town hall.
