Architect worked with Buro Happold to improve sustainability in a challenging climate
Jestico + Whiles has unveiled its latest design for Doha College鈥檚 new Qatar campus, which will open in late 2016 subject to planning approval.
The 61,000 sq m site will host 2,000 pupils in a single integrated school for ages 3-18. Along with additional teaching facilities, the new campus will provide a new sports centre and drop-off point.
The architect worked with engineer Buro Happold to focus on sustainability in extreme climate conditions. Jestico + Whiles said passive environmental measures would be employed, as well as techniques like earth tubes, solar chimneys and shading roof structures.
The firm competed against five other architectural practices to win the design selection process in December 2011. Jestico + Whiles will submit their planning application in early 2014.
Heinz Richardson, director at Jestico + Whiles said: 鈥淭he new building aims to encourage both the students and the local community to appreciate innovative design solutions and reinforce their enthusiasm for a sustainable development of Doha.鈥
Doha College is one of the oldest British curriculum schools in Qatar and is sponsored by the British Embassy.
