Kier already working on £108m development in Battersea
The Royal College of Art has unveiled new pictures of its Herzog & de Meuron campus as it launches a five-year development plan.
The £108m development in Battersea, south London, is currently under construction by Kier, while the university today announced it also plans to revamp its 1961-opened headquarters, the Darwin ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø, in Kensington Gore.
The university, which was attended by artists including David Hockney and Tracey Emin, is planning to expand its student population from 2,300 to 3,000 and take in science students for the first time.
Its new 15,500m2 centre will feature workshops and manufacturing facilities across a four-storey studio building and eight-storey research building. Mott MacDonald is lead consultant on the scheme.
The campus will also feature a triple-storey hangar for art shows, public walkways intersecting the site, and an on-campus cafe and art materials shop.
It is due to be completed in time for the academic year starting September 2021. After that, the RCA will develop the Darwin ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø, which is next door to the Royal Albert Hall.
