Worldwide output to grow 25% over three years, with China contributing over half of global output four years from now

The global production of cement is expected to rise to 3.4bn tonnes by 2010, according to a study from Materials Technology Publications.

The growth, which is over 25% on 2007 figures, will arise from an additional 648m tonnes of capacity scheduled to come on line in the next two years, much of which is destined for China and the Middle East.

Chinese production of cement was estimated at 1.24bn tonnes in 2007, a 14.5% jump on the previous year and a threefold increase from 1995. It is predicted that by 2012 the country will produce 1.83m tonnes, over half of global output. By comparison the EU produced 283m tonnes, or 10.5% of world production in 2007.
