Gleeds has replaced Mace as the project manager on the Liverpool hospital scheme delayed by Carillion鈥檚 collapse.

Mace鈥檚 consultancy arm was drafted in to help get the project back on track last June but Gleeds took over the role at the start of this month.

A Mace spokesperson said the firm was brought in by the Hospital Company, the PFI vehicle in charge of building the scheme, on a temporary basis.

The PFI part of the scheme was ditched in September with Laing O鈥橰ourke, who is also working on the neighbouring Clatterbridge Cancer hospital, being formally appointed as main contractor a month later.

O鈥橰ourke has been working with Mace and the NHS trust behind the scheme (pictured) to figure out the scope of work remaining as well as getting work restarted onsite. Gleeds has now replaced Mace in these roles.

Jonathan Stewart, UK managing director at Gleeds, confirmed that Gleeds had been appointed as project and cost managers.

The project, which has been subject to a review by engineering firm, Arup has been hit with problems both in the lead up to and since Carillion fell into liquidation in January.

The scheme has been hit by a number of issues including cracks that were discovered in structural concrete beams and non-compliant cladding which was fitted.

Other problems found include the existing lighting installation, where the energy saving system is not yet fully operational. This will be completed next month meaning lights can be turned off when areas of the building are not occupied.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS trust declined to comment.
