Explosion kills four maintenance workers and seriously injuries another
Four maintenance workers were killed last night by an explosion at Chevron Oil Refinery at Pembroke Dock.
Dyfed Powys Police said they had launched an investigation into the blast, which occurred at 6.22pm yesterday.
The explosion happened in a 730 cubic metre storage tank where maintenance work was being carried out.
Chevron confirmed that the four people who died were contractors and said another worker was receiving treatment in hospital for serious burns.
Greg Hanggi, refinery general manager, said: 鈥淭his news is utterly devastating. The loss of our co-workers has come as a huge shock to us all.
鈥漁ur thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to their families.
鈥淲e will ensure that all employees and contractors are fully supported throughout this difficult time.鈥
A police investigation is now underway with the Health and Safety Executive.
Chief superintendent Gwyn Thomas said: 鈥淧aramedics have confirmed that four people lost their lives as a result of the incident, officers are now in the processes of informing the next of kin and will support the families throughout this difficult time.
鈥淥ur thoughts are now with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.鈥
