Fosters’ development ‘reinvents mall-based retail’
Foster + Partners has unveiled images of its completed Apple store in Dubai Mall.
Overlooking the city’s famous Dubai Fountains and spanning across two storeys, the outlet features a 56.6m wide, 5.5m deep terrace and features 18 ‘solar wings’ that offer shade to visitors during the day and open up during the evening.
Each of the one tonne wings is 11m tall, three metres wide, and made up of 340 carbon fibre rods, forming a net.
Stefan Behling, head of studio, Foster + Partners, said: “The design of Apple Dubai Mall is about creating an exceptional architectural and social experience for visitors, bringing to the fore new ideas about the evolving role of Apple Flagships in the community. I am sure Apple Dubai Mall will become a true people’s place.”
Access to the store is through full height, glazed pivoting doors on both levels, directly from Dubai Mall.
The new shaded terrace features nine large trees within planters which rotate to follow the sun’s path, incorporating seating for visitors.
