Appointments from the ten-strong shortlist are expected to be made by the end of the year
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has shortlisted 10 design teams for the basketball and fencing arenas for the 2012 Games in London.
The teams invited to bid are led by Atkins, Biong Architects, Bligh Voller Nield, Campbell Reith, Canon Design, David Morley Architects, IDOM UK, Mott MacDonald, Sinclair Knight Merz and Sport Concepts.
The ODA plans to procure individual design teams for each venue, although designers may bid for more than one package. Their appointment is expected later this year, and their designs must meet safety standards and host test events one year before the games.
David Higgins, ODA chief executive said: 鈥淲e are looking for design teams to provide innovative solutions for important temporary arenas such as basketball and fencing. The industry has responded positively to this challenge.鈥
The 12,000 capacity basketball arena will host the basketball preliminaries competition, part of the modern pentathlon competition and the Paralympic wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby competitions. The 8,000 capacity fencing arena will host the 4,000 spectators for the Paralympic Wheelchair Fencing and Paralympic Judo competitions.
The procurement of construction contractors will begin in early 2008, and their work is due to be completed in 2011.
