ODA chief executive says initial indications are that the fire in a disused warehouse was an accident not arson

David Higgins, ODA chief executive announced an investigation into a fire which started at midday on the Olympic site.

He said: 鈥淭here will be a full investigation into this fire in a disused warehouse which was being prepared for demolition. Initial indications would suggest that this was an accident rather than arson.

"We are in touch with local residents and are keeping them informed of the situation.

鈥淭here has been a first class response from the emergency services. Meanwhile work is continuing in the rest of the park.鈥�


The fire cast a huge black cloud of smoke over the East of London.

Earlier a London Fire Brigade statement said: 鈥淓ight fire engines and around 40 firefighters are currently attending an incident on Waterden Road, East London.鈥�

The Olympic Delivery Authority has issued a statment saying: 鈥淭he fire is on the western edge of the Olympic Park on the site of an empty warehouse, behind the bus depot on Waterden Road.

鈥淭he warehouse is in the process of being demolished. The London Fire Brigade is on site and the ODA鈥檚 site staff are working closely with them.鈥�
