Figures from Office of National Statistics shows construction is the worst-hit sector in economy

Employment in the construction industry fell by the largest of any sector of the economy, with 67,000 losing their jobs, according to the latest government figures.

The number of jobs decreased by 3.1% between June and September 2009, from 2,162,000 to 2,095,000, according to the figures from the Office of National Statistics..

Over the last year, the number of jobs in construction has fallen by 8.2%, amounting to a 187,000 reduction in jobs.

This means that one in four of the 649,000 job cuts in the UK have come from the construction sector. Vacancies in the construction sector also fell by almost half compared with last year.
