Contractor's Omani business wins construction deal for two-phase development designed by q-dar
Carillion's business in Oman, Carillion Alawi, has won a contract to build the Majlis, a new parliament building in the centre of Muscat, with an estimated construction value of 拢275m.
The contract includes the construction of a new building to house the Majlis Oman, Majlis A'shura and Majlis A'ddowla, together with VIP areas, an information centre, a library, offices and other support facilities.
Work will start immediately and will be carried out in two phases, with the Majlis Oman completed by September 2011 and the remaining works by September 2012.
London-based architect q-dar said the parliament was a microcosm of the Oman territory, surrounded by water representing seas and oceans. The gates of access to and from the site echo the ports of Oman.
Having worked in Oman for over 40 years, Carillion Alawi previously built the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in Oman, and is working on a number of major projects, including the Royal Opera House for the Royal Court Affairs and the Oman Botanic Gardens for the Diwan of the Royal Court.
