Wolfgang Buttress-designed structure set to cause a buzz
The Wolfgang Buttress and BDP-designed British pavilion has opened to the public at the Milan Expo.
Taking inspiration from the Expo’s theme, Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life the 1,910sq m pavilion has been developed around the concept of a beehive, and showcases how new research and technology are helping address food security and biodiversity.
The concept for the design was worked up by Buttress in collaboration with engineer Tristan Simmonds and the Manchester studio of BDP. It follows the dance of a bee, travelling through a series of landscapes.
The experience starts with a journey through an orchard, followed by a wildflower meadow and on to the centrepiece, The Hive, a 14m-cubed sculptural element that uses light and sound to simulate the activity of a real beehive.
The £6 million pavilion has been manufactured by York-based firm Stage One on behalf of UK Trade and Investments (UKTI) and is one of 144 pavilions from different nations exhibiting at the Expo.
