Derbyshire firm puts 45 staff on notice their jobs are at risk
Builder Bowmer & Kirkland has notified 45 staff they are at risk of redundancy, it has emerged.
The firm, which is based in the Derbyshire village of Heage, employs more than 1,300 staff in units across the Midlands, London and the North West.
Chairman John Kirkland told the that the move would affect both site and office-based staff. 鈥淭his decision hasn鈥檛 been made lightly,鈥 he said.
鈥淭he construction industry remains extremely challenging and it is with deep regret that we have to re-evaluate our staffing levels but it is necessary to ensure the competitiveness of our construction division in the future.鈥
The news emerged as the firm reported a 4% fall in revenue to 拢678m for the year to 31 August 2012, with operating profit down from 拢43.8m in 2011 to 拢20.8m.
The firm also said its directors took a pay rise of over 拢6m in 2012, with total directors鈥 pay rising to 拢16,586,266 compared to 拢10,370,744 in 2011.
