Planning submitted for kilometre long floating river walk
London Mayor Boris Johnson has pledged 拢60m in funding to build a kilometre long floating river walk along the north bank of the River Thames.
Subject to planning approval the 鈥淟ondon River Park鈥� will provide a continuous 12m wide floating pontoon on a stretch of river running between Blackfriars Bridge and the Customs House.
Eight themed pavilions will be constructed along the route which will be used to host events beside the Thames. Works on the River Park will be completed in summer 2012 with the park scheduled to open before the Olympic Games.
The initial park design by Gensler arechitects won the Mayor鈥檚 award for planning excellence at the 2010 London Planning Awards. After arousing much interest among potential backers, Singapore鈥檚 Venus Group agreed to finance the project.
The group has agreed to share 30% of net revenues from the commercial operation of the River Park with the Mayor for public benefit.
Mace is understood to be involved with the construction of the park.
