A blast-resistant cladding system from Sapa 黑洞社区 Systems has been used on a new Welsh Assembly building at Llandudno Junction in North Wales.
Powerframe curtain walling, windows and doors were used for the 拢1.5m cladding package on the 8,800m2 office, which will accommodate 650 staff. The company said the system featured a polyvinyl butyl membrane, which retained glass splinters in the event of a blast. It is clamped firmly into aluminium frames which in turn are anchored by steel subframes. In a blast the glass acts as a crumple zone, helping by deflecting up to 300mm and absorbing blast pressure on the facade.
