Specialists put on notice for the programme's pilot next spring
Birmingham city council is preparing to launch a modular housing development programme next spring.
The council-owned Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust (BMHT) is planning to trial a 50-home offsite manufactured housing development using volumetric and modular solutions, with a larger roll out programme to follow in 2020.
Contractors will be required to construct a pre-designed series of around five different homes that have already been developed by the council as part of the BMHT Modular programe.
Successful firms will also be required to undertake associated ground works including all utility connections and landscaping.
The council said contractors would need to offer "a turnkey approach to providing homes commissioned and ready to occupy".
According to the prior information notice published to the Official Journal of the European Union, a contract notice for the modular programme will be published on 31 March next year.
Through its existing BMHT programme, the council has become the largest house builder in the city, delivering between 20-25% of all new homes built.
It delivered its 3,000th home in July, having built 1,714 homes built for rent and almost 1,286 built for sale since the council launched the BMHT programme in 2010.
