Contractors lined up for major work at airport

Bechtel has won a deal to be Gatwick鈥檚 delivery partner if it is chosen ahead of Heathrow by the government for a new runway.

The US engineering giant has already been working with Gatwick for the past two years on developing a delivery programme, execution plan and logistics strategy to support a Terry Farrell-designed second runway and new terminal.

Commenting on the decision to appoint Bechtel, Gatwick chief executive Stewart Wingate said Bechtel is a 鈥済lobal leader with a strong track record in delivering significant infrastructure projects.鈥

Bechtel鈥檚 general manager for infrastructure, Amjad Bangash, said: 鈥淲ehave provided Gatwick with robust plans for a second runway and are confident that this low risk project can be built to the highest quality, safely and sustainably 鈥 and that it can be operational by 2025.鈥

The contract with Bechtel comes after Costain won a 拢120m deal with Network Rail to design and build a new train station at Gatwick Airport.

Costain has already begun work on the early development phases of the scheme, with construction expected to start next year and be completed by 2020.
