The new facilities will specialise in paediatric and women鈥檚 health
BDP has signed a contract for a 拢442m project redesigning two family-centred hospital buildings for Birmingham Women鈥檚 and Children鈥檚 NHS Foundation Trust.
The project will provide upgrades to emergency and theatre departments, increase intensive care capacity and enhance inpatient wards and outpatient clinics.
The architect was appointed via the NHS Shared Business Services framework
BDP will lead the redesign of Birmingham Women鈥檚 Hospital, opposite the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, including the introduction of a new building. The wider design team includes Arup, Archus and WT Partnership.
The team will also design and engineer a new clinical building at Birmingham Children鈥檚 Hospital on Steelhouse Lane.
The plan would see the two new blocks built on the same sites by 2025, subject to funding approval. Parts of the children鈥檚 hospital are more than 120 years old and the women鈥檚 hospital is more than 50 years old.
The enhancements to the children鈥檚 hospital will include emergency and theatre departments to replace the existing services, additional paediatric intensive care capacity and new inpatient wards.
The women鈥檚 hospital upgrade will allow the trust to replace its inpatient wards, expand services for specific gynaecology theatres and birthing rooms and ensure sufficient capacity within its outpatient clinics.
