The Ministry of Defence aims to cut carbon emissions from its building stock by 15% over the next five years as its contribution to tackling climate change.
The measures were anounced as part of its Sustainable Development Action Plan, which sets out the department鈥檚 key priorities. These include increased energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption and investing in more sustainable technologies.
Defence secretary Des Browne said: 鈥淲e have set high standards in our Sustainable Development Action Plan, with the challenging aspiration to become a national leader in sustainable development by 2012.鈥
The plan sets out the MoD鈥檚 commitment to meeting both pan-government and its own targets for a wide range of areas including energy efficiency, waste management, water, biodiversity and sustainable procurement. These aims include:
Reducing CO2 emissions from MoD buildings by 15% by 2012, through increased energy efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and investing in more sustainable technologies.
Better water management. The MoD uses about 24 million m3 of water a year. It aims to reduce this by 25%, by 2020.
Waste management. Some MoD sites are recycling up to 70% of waste. The department will continue to minimise waste, and will recover and recycle more waste than it sends to landfill by 2012.
