Winner: Social, Emotional and Mental Health Schools Programme, Manchester Council

ISG delivered the new Southern Cross, Castlefield Campus and Camberwell Park schools, catering for students with special social, emotional and mental health needs, for Manchester city council. Creating a legacy for the school and its community was at the heart of each project. Overall, the programme delivered £12.7m in local, social and economic value, representing 67% of the construction contract value.

Badenoch & Strathspey Community Hospital

Despite there being no social value weighting built into the project’s procurement procedures, Balfour Beatty committed to deliver a comprehensive community benefits plan that reported monthly against a set of community objectives. This included actively targeting subcontractors within 40 miles of the site in Aviemore, the protection of local wildlife and a legacy community therapy garden project. 

Gascoigne West, phase 1

This 200-unit mixed-tenure community has 60% of homes for affordable rent. The social value weighting was 10%, on a build value of £61m. The strategy focused on collaborative delivery mechanisms and resources to be developed through Be First and extended to all regeneration in Barking. Another objective was to build the skills of the construction workforce to enable more local residents and businesses to benefit.

Social value generated on this logistics scheme in Milton Keynes included an array of benefits to the local area, with 39% added social value against a contract value of £12m. The project supported local businesses, with £3.8m spent in the local supply chain. All contracts included commitments to ethical procurement, and access to wellbeing valued at £14,000 was provided to 117 employees.

Manchester Engineering Campus Development

This flagship project for Manchester university focused on supporting local businesses, contributing to community groups, providing local employment and delivering energy efficiencies. Targets achieved early included 119 new jobs, 116 apprenticeships and work given to 15 rehabilitated offenders and 11 long-term unemployed people.

Olive Morris Court

This 32-home modular scheme provides secure accommodation with tailored support for residents with a history of homelessness, to help them return to independent living. The Hill Group donated 16 units and worked with the council to transform a former brownfield site into landscaped homes along with a service hub for residents.

Park East

The ethos behind this scheme in Erith, south-east London, was the regeneration of the community, delivering high-quality buildings and public realm and achieving low-cost long-term ownership for both Orbit and residents. Wates created 39 full-time jobs, 35 apprenticeships and 27 work experience placements, as well as generating school engagement and community activities.

Pencoedtre High School

This £35m school project provides a state-of-the-art educational facility in south Wales. As part of the scheme, the project team were committed to supporting the local supply chain and providing local employment. Alongside this was the promotion of skills and training opportunities.

Prince Philip Park, Whitehill & Bordon

The target at Prince Philip Park is to create more than one job for every new home built. Estimates suggest 3,000 jobs will eventually have been created. The project has also used early and ongoing engagement to inform the immediate reuse of former military buildings for new activities including a roller-hockey rink and a business start-up hub.

Social value interventions on this energy improvement programme for 60 properties in Tonbridge, Kent, and 60 properties in Wisbech, Fenland, focused on jobs and skills, digital inclusion and community benefit, with outcomes measured through a variety of methods.
