A dozen projects, including a £152m Welsh road contract, boost contractor to top of this month’s league table

Costain has surged to the top of the contractors’ table for June after securing 12 contracts worth a combined total of £457m.

The firm’s largest contract win was a £152m deal with the Welsh government to dual a section of the A465 between Gilwern and Brynmawr.

Skanska bagged second spot with four contract wins valued at £361m, which also included a £60m contract from Network Rail for London Bridge station’s eastern approach junction.

Third place went to Kier, which secured 59 contracts worth £191m.

Meanwhile, fourth place went to embattled Balfour Beatty, dropping from last month’s top spot, having secured 43 contracts valued at £157m. The wins included a £17.3m contract at Dungeness power station for the National Grid.

A £103m contract for Carillion with Network Rail to redouble the rail line between Kettering and Corby in Northamptonshire helped the firm take fifth place in the table, with a total of £117m.

Hot on its heels in sixth place was Winvic Group, with six contract wins valued at £115m.

Graham Construction came in seventh place, taking home three contract wins in June totalling £108m.

Willmott Dixon, Black & Veatch and Wates rounded out the top 10.

June saw an increase in the total value of contracts awarded to the top 10 firms compared with the previous month, with the contractors winning £1.7bn worth of work, up from £1.5bn in May.
