Kensington Gardens gallery set to open latest summer structure
London鈥檚 Serpentine Gallery has unveiled its 12th annual summer pavilion, which has been designed by the team responsible for the 2008 Olympics Beijing National Stadium.
Swiss architect Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei鈥檚 joint creation takes visitors from the gallery鈥檚 lawn to the shade beneath a floating roof that is supported by 12 columns.
Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were present at the structure鈥檚 opening, however Ai Weiwei was unable to attend as he is still subject to a 12-month travel ban imposed by the Chinese authorities
Instead, he sent a video message played at the ceremony.
Gallery co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist said it was fitting that the three should be reunited to work on a project in London in the city鈥檚 Olympic year.
The pavilion will be open to the public until 14 October.
