Platform systems aim to address the challenges of a lack of standardisation and interoperability between different MMC systems which add complexity, cost and adds risk as clients are reliant on just one supplier.
In essence a platform is a standardised chassis – in other words, a frame to which other components can be attached. These other components allow for a degree of customisation. They are widely used in manufacturing – for example, in the car industry. Volkswagen Group spent billions developing its MQB platform, which is now on its second iteration and used for a wide range of smaller models across its four brands.
