BIM adoption remains stuck on a plateau, according to the latest NBS survey. But those who are working with BIM are doing it better – and the new building safety legislation is likely to give an extra boost
Have we reached peak BIM? Adoption figures in the latest NBS BIM survey suggest we might have; 73% of respondents say they have now adopted BIM, a rise of four percentage points from last year. But adoption was running at 71% in 2018, so the headline figure has risen by just three percentage points in two years.
Contrast these figures to those of 10 years ago, when the survey started. In 2011 BIM adoption was running at just 13% and rapidly increased during the following three years. It grew more slowly up to 2018, when adoption hit a plateau.
What does the headline adoption figure tell us about how people are using BIM on a day-to-day basis? The real benefits come from sharing data in a structured way and using that information to design and construct buildings more efficiently.
