Gallery will scrap original Jamie Fobert design, but architect confirms he will reapply
Tate St Ives has published the tender for a project design team to develop the next stage of its expansion.
Over the next six months Tate will appoint an architect and project team and work with them to confirm the brief, the associated costs and the funding package.
The panel assessing the tenders will include representation from Tate, Cornwall council, St Ives council and an independent assessor.
Tate St Ives and Cornwall council have been working with the local community since 2005 to review the proposals to develop more facilities for the gallery and surrounding area.
Architect Jamie Fobert originally won the tender for the project鈥檚 design in 2005, but his plans stalled in the face of substantial local opposition.
Both Fobert and the gallery say Tate St Ives was forced to re-tender because the client and site had changed.
Fobert has confirmed that he intends to reapply with a fresh design, and hopes to keep working on the extension scheme.
He said of the development: 鈥淲e鈥檇 obviously like to continue but that鈥檚 not our decision. The Tate鈥檚 been entirely open throughout the whole process. They have been wonderful but they have to behave in accordance with the law.鈥
