David Kohn Architects’ A Room for London is part of the London 2012 Festival
A bespoke pop-up hotel perched on top of Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank of the Thames is primed for its first guests.
The one-bedroom hotel room, designed by David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner, has been developed as part the London 2012 Festival and will host guests on a nightly basis through to the end of the year.
The design for A Room for London drew inspiration from the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad while in the Congo in 1890, a journey described in his novel Heart of Darkness.
It was selected from over 500 entries in an open international competition set by social enterprise Living Architecture and art organisation Artangel in association with the Southbank Centre.
The hotel has an en-suite, double bedroom, kitchenette, library and viewing deck. The team behind the project said the room offered a “unique and playful perspective on an area of London more commonly seen from river level”.
“Guests are invited to rest and reflect upon what they see and hear during their one night stay; logging their thoughts, observing cloud patterns, the character of the river and deeper undercurrents,” the organisers said.
The first guests are scheduled for this month, with bookings opening to the public for the second half of the year in the next few weeks.
