Revisions are said to pay homage to the ‘slum pub’ that was on the site
The City of London Corporation has approved revised plans for a 15-storey tower near Aldgate underground station, including the “reimagining” of an historic City pub.
The newly approved mixed-use scheme at 60 Aldgate High Street, which has been designed by Acme, expands on previously consented plans for an office building, but now also incorporates a new Still & Star Public House, which pays homage to the original ”slum pub” that dates from the 1800s.
The wider project team includes cost consultant Alinea, structural consultants AKTII and MEP, sustainability and energy consultants Red Engineering Design.
The client on the project is 4C Hotel Group.
The development includes a refurbished hotel, a new office building, retail and business units and a 15-storey residential building, as well as a landscaped park, a number of landscaped urban squares and both long- and short-stay cycle parking.
The Still & Star pub, which was deemed an asset of community value in 2016, will be relocated from Little Somerset Street to a much more prominent location on Aldgate High Street.
The new location allows the pub to be expanded by 90 sq m, while the details of the original facade will be scanned and replicated. The original pub will be demolished.
