Latymer Upper School scoops two awards at 2008 Brick Awards

A new music school in west London by architect van Heyningen & Haward scooped two categories at this year’s Brick Awards. The project at Latymer Upper School won the award for Best Commercial ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø and was also named Supreme Winner.

The judges were impressed both by the way the building met the client’s brief and also the positive contribution it makes to the surroundings.

In a closely fought category, Malborough Brickwork won the Specialist Brickwork Contractor award in part for its work on the Sheffield University student village while Innovative Use of Clay Product award went to the Hair Salon in Belfast, designed by Jamison Architects.

Best Refurbishment project was the St Pancras CTRL by Ingram Consultancy and contractor Stonewest, while the Best Worldwide Brick Project went to the stunning office building for SAHRDC in New Delhi, India.

A speical award was also given for the intricate restoration of the Lovelace Mausoleum in East Horsley, which was carried out by The John Deal Practice and brickwork contractor Chris Anstey.

The nights other winners were:

• Best Private Housing Development: The Barge Arm Development, The Docks, Gloucester

• Best Public ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø: The Bluecoat, Liverpool

• Best Public ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø: Broad Road, Sale, Manchester

• Volume Housebuilding Award: David Wilson Homes for the Herons Landing, Eton Court, The Hermitage

• Sustainability Award: New Head Office Fitzpatrick Contractors

• Best Landscape Project: Lakeside Terrace, Silk Street, London

• Best Craftsmanship Project: New House at Hayes, Newbury, Berkshire

• Best International Project: 2 Houses in Killiney. Dublin, Ireland

The Brick Awards are one of the longest-established and most widely respected design awards in the UK. Organised by ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø magazine and the Brick Development Association (BDA), the Awards recognise excellence in design and construction using brick.
