Business barometer £351m Salford Media City takes contractor to number one in January

Bovis Lend Lease’s £351m deal to redevelop the 37-acre Media City site in Salford, Greater Manchester, propelled it to the top of the leader board in January.

Bovis will act as management contractor on the scheme, which will give the BBC a new headquarters in north-west England. It also picked up a £27.5m deal for the John Lennon airport hotel in Liverpool.

In contrast to Bovis, which won only four contracts, Morgan Sindall moved up from number nine to the second spot after hoovering up 33 jobs, together worth £264m.

Sir Robert McAlpine made the most spectacular leap up the table in January, shooting up from 34 to take the third spot with contracts worth £255m. These included two commercial deals in the London financial services sector: a £168m project for Swiss banking group UBS and a £87m deal with financial consultant Mourant & Co.

HBG had another solid month, slipping one place to number four. Its £242m-worth of wins included a £140m deal with the Medical Research Council in Cambridge and a £58m win with Harrison Developments in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Balfour Beatty added 28 deals in January to the 46 it won in December, giving it a total of £158m. They included a £40m job with Defence Estates at RAF Menwith Hill in Yorkshire and a £26m contract at Langside College in Glasgow.

Miller stayed in the top 10, despite the distraction of a power struggle within the Miller family for control over the company.

It won 28 projects with a combined value of £134m.

Kier, Carillion, Rok and Sisk made up the rest of the top 10. Sisk was not placed in December but won £59m-worth of work in January, including a £20.8m deal for Great Edge Hotels in London.

If civils work is counted, Laing O’Rourke and Skanska enter the top 10. And in our rolling total for the past 12 months, Balfour Beatty and Laing O’Rourke remained in the top two positions but Kier leapfrogged HBG to take the number three spot.
