FaberMaunsell and Hugh Broughton Architects have won the competition to design a new research station for British Antarctic Survey featured in BSj’s April edition. Their dramatic design will be based on two platforms, each with six interconnected modules, and includes a central social and recreational section. Other features include a hydroponics installation that will provide up to three fresh salads a week for the crew – and also offer the refreshing site of some greenery. Evacuated tube solar/thermal collectors have been incorporated on the two energy modules to augment the hot water heating during the summer months taking advantage of the 24 h daylight.
