It’s unlikely that implementing the recommendations of the Hackitt report are at the top of the ministerial in-tray right now.

The government is in a state of near collapse, receiving just 9% of the European election vote, and is now consumed by a leadership contest that is unlikely to provide any answers to the Brexit conundrum. The housing minister, Kit Malthouse, has thrown his hat into the leadership ring and communities secretary James Brokenshire may do the same – or at least be busy positioning himself for a plum job once the new leader has been elected.

But implementing Dame Judith Hackitt’s recommendations, like the rest of government business, isn’t going to go away. The second anniversary of the Grenfell fire is just two weeks away and the first birthday of the Hackitt report has just passed. So, how far have we got in tackling the industry shortcomings identified in the report?
