Sheffield University scheme gets planning permission
Sheffield University has been given planning permission by the city council for its 拢43m centre for excellence in aerospace advanced manufacturing.
The scheme, called Factory 2050, centres around a large circular building and will house a range of new technologies including advanced robotics, flexible automation, unmanned workspace, off-line printing in virtual environments linked to plug-and-play robotics, 3D printing and new programming and training tools.
The aerospace facility will sit directly opposite the university鈥檚 Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at Sheffield Business Park.
Local MP Clive Betts said the university鈥檚 support for advanced manufacturing had had an 鈥渆normous impact鈥� in 鈥渃reating high quality jobs and hundreds of new opportunities for apprenticeships鈥� in the city.
He said: 鈥淭he planning approval represents a real step forward in moving this vital activity to the next level, and giving the city region the opportunity to further its reputation as a leading force in advanced manufacturing, not just at UK level, but on the global stage.鈥�
The government this week laid out plans to see 拢25m of government money and 拢94m of private sector funding invested in projects in Sheffield鈥檚 Enterprise Zone.
