US President Barack Obama is to help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion in green measures over the next ten years.
The move comes as part of the President’s wider energy strategy which has seen him pledge to reduce electricity demand from the US department of energy by 15% by 2020.
The US President has said that this can be achieved by setting annual demand reduction targets on utilities, and pushing for more stringent building and appliance standards.
US Federal government buildings are also being targeted, with a 40% increase in efficiency set for all new federal buildings within the next five years. By 2025, all new federal buildings are to be zero carbon.
The US President has said that energy efficiency measures will free America from its dependence on foreign oil, and that he intends to eliminate current imports from the Middle East and Venezuela within the next decade.
The US President also aims to make all new buildings carbon neutral by 2030.
