Initial proposals rejected for potential impact on nearby homes
Revised plans for a new £84.5m mental health unit to be built by Bam in north Wales have been sent out for consultation.
Proposals for the facility at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd were rejected by Denbighshire County Council in 2021 because its location would have impacted neighbouring residential properties.
In its new application, the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has shifted the mental health hospital’s location from the south-west corner of the hospital campus off Rhuddlan Road in Bodelwyddan, to the north-west corner, farther away from the residences.
The Powell Dobson Architects-designed scheme will replace the Ablett Unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd as well as the Older People’s Mental Health inpatient facility at Bryn Hesketh in Colwyn Bay.
It would be 105,400 sq ft and three storeys at its tallest, with 59 patient beds, two adult acute care wards and another two wards reserved for older people.
The health board is targeting a BREEAM rating of Excellent for the hospital, which will incorporate solar panels into its roof.
Bam is aiming to begin work on the hospital next spring, subject to planning permission, with a targeted completion date of 2026.
The project team also includes planner Tetra Tech, engineer Ramboll, M&E engineer Arup, M&E contractor Lorne Stewart and landscape architect Soltys Brewster.
The consultation on the proposals runs until 5 March.
