Secretary of state wants new team to conduct low carbon review into cutting industry emissions for 2020

A 鈥渓ow carbon construction innovation and growth team鈥� was launched today by secretary of state Peter Mandelson.

Lord Mandelson attended the first meeting of the innovation and growth team (IGT), laying down a challenge to members, for the industry to be "fit for purpose鈥� to deliver a low carbon future.

The low carbon construction review will be undertaken by the IGT members over the next year. Its aim is to identify how the construction industry can best deliver the future carbon reduction commitments for 2020 and beyond.

Initial findings from the review are due in spring 2010.

Mandelson said: 鈥淭he Construction Industry is a vital part of Britain鈥檚 economy, employing 2.5 million workers and contributing around 10% of GDP. The sector will play a crucial part as the UK tackles climate change, as emissions from buildings account for around 44% of Britain鈥檚 total end use carbon emissions.鈥�

Chief construction adviser Paul Morrell said: 鈥淢eeting the Low Carbon Challenge is one of the biggest issues facing Britain鈥檚 construction industry.

鈥淥ur aim is to produce an action plan and recommendations for industry and government to ensure a road-map is in place for the industry to play their part in delivering a low carbon future, and to make sure we are well placed to take advantage of the opportunities it will bring.鈥�

There will be five workstreams on the IGT:

  • Cross-cutting issues
  • Housing new & existing
  • Buidings new & existing
  • Infrastructure and Major Projects.

Each of these will involve representatives from industry best placed to contribute.

Regular updates on the IGT鈥檚 progress will be posted on the BIS Construction website and contributions will be welcomed.

Members of the steering group will include chief executive of Atkins Keith Clarke, former chief operating officer of Laing O鈥橰ourke Tony Douglas and chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority John Armitt.
