Scheme designed by BDP
The NHS trust behind a major hospital redevelopment in Leicester has raised fears that covid will derail its building plans.
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS trust has flagged concerns about how the impact of the pandemic will hit work on its Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General hospital initiative.
It is one of six schemes set to share £2.7bn of government funding.
But ahead of a meeting of the trust’s board later this week, the trust said costs on the £450m job, designed by BDP, could go up.
The papers said: "There is a risk that post-covid operational procedures will impact on the efficiency of the workforce resulting from doffing and donning, operational practices and requirements to socially distance leading to clinical objectives and benefit realisation for the programme being compromised.
"[It's] not possible to accurately predict when some measures will be reduced in line with a vaccination and roll out programme."
The board said it was implementing a number of controls, including more efficient ways of working.
Other projects set to share in the £2.7bn windfall include Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s plans for Leeds General Infirmary, the full upgrade of Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex, as well as building a new Watford General hospital.
Barts Health NHS Trust in north-east London has been given funding to build a new Whipps Cross University Hospital and recently confirmed Aecom as its project manager, while Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust will build a new St Helier Hospital in the capital’s south-west.
