But close to 10,000 jobs have been saved

Carillion

The number of staff who have lost their jobs since Carillion went bust edged closer to the 2,000 mark this week.

A total of 1,802 people have been made redundant since the firm went under in January with another 97 employees given their notices in the past week.

But a spokesperson for the Official Receiver said 9,946 employees have had their jobs saved since the company went into liquidation.

In an update on progress in the past week, the spokesperson said: 鈥淢ore than half (54%) the pre-liquidation workforce 鈥 close to 10,000 employees 鈥 have now been found secure ongoing employment so far through the liquidation. A further 873 jobs have been saved with employees transferring to new suppliers who have picked up contracts that Carillion had been delivering.

鈥淒iscussions with potential purchasers continue. I am continuing to engage with staff, elected employee representatives and unions to keep them informed as these arrangements are confirmed.鈥

More than 5,400 employees are currently being retained to enable Carillion to deliver the remaining services it is providing for public and private sector customers.

They remain in limbo until decisions are made to either transfer or cease these contracts.

Carillion employed more than 40,000 staff globally around half of whom worked in the UK. Its head office in Wolverhampton had around 400 staff.
